Venusberg is a mythical mountain where Venus held the knight Tannhäuser captive. Wagner, who lived an impossible love story with Mathilde Wesendonck, imagined a bacchanal in the prison of love while Strauss paired a different dance with the affairs of the heart: the waltz, which Ravel also celebrated in 1920.
