Riccardo Chailly, conducting
The Milanese conductor is well-familiar with the universe of Stravinsky’s Petrushka. In the “Burlesque scenes” written in 1911 for the Ballets russes, we witness the adventures of a marionette escaped from his master’s theatre. With as many alibis as sonic inventions, from the orchestral imitation of the barrel organ to the popular songs peppered through the score, as well as the acerbic timbres to the irregular rhythms that announce The Rite of Spring, created two years later.
