At his death in 1791, Mozart left the score of his Requiem unfinished. In 1792, as his students were completing the work (mainly Süssmayer for the version performed on these three evenings), a Salzburg newspaper had already written of a composer haunted by the 'fear of writing a requiem for himself'.
