Around 1925, Hindemith created a parody of Wagner’s Overture to The Flying Dutchman for a strings quartet, with built-in gaps and wrong notes producing the effect of a particularly clumsy sight-reading… As for the Octet for Strings, Mendelssohn wrote it when he was sixteen years of age, as a birthday present for his violin teacher.
