Haydn’s “purely instrumental” work took inspiration from Christ’s words from the cross. Alongside these “lyrics” performed by a string quartet, Jean-Luc Nancy’s added text and Olivier Dejour’s music create a melodrama in the style of Monteverdi’s beloved Nuove Musiche—a new exploration of the long dreamt of medium of a spoken-sung hybrid combining the magic of song with the necessity of speech.
