Démos ("Dispositif d’éducation musicale et orchestrale à vocation sociale") is a cultural democratization project based on the practice of orchestra music.

The program, part of an overall artistic and pedagogical approach, consists in teaching classical music to children who, for economic, social or cultural reasons do not have ready access to this art form from existing institutions.

Specifically, the project is aimed at children aged 7 to 12, living in disadvantaged urban areas (“QPV”) or disadvantaged rural areas (“ZRR”), at some distance from the usual places where classical music is taught and practiced. Each child is entrusted with a musical instrument for three years. Supervised by professional musicians and social workers, the children follow weekly classes of 3½ hours on average, regularly meeting up with other children in the same region for an orchestral rehearsal (“tutti”). A major concert is organized at the end of each year in an emblematic location in the region.

The program was launched in 2010, and the Philharmonie de Paris is responsible for its overall management.

The Démos project is supported by the State and national institutional partners, local authorities, and sponsors. It is also sponsored by Lilian Thuram and his foundation Education against Racism, and Khatia Buniatishvili.
