Dauntingly difficult, Sonata No. 2 ranks among the capital piano scores of the 20th century. The second work in the programme, Book II of Structures, premiered by Pierre Boulez with Yvonne Loriod in 1961, is a musical seduction.
This second segment of Pierre Boulez’s complete piano music features three important works: Notations, his ‘notes from an apprenticeship’ that would later be spectacularly developed for orchestra, and the First and Third Sonatas.
Baudelaire’s famous invocation, ‘L’Invitation au voyage’, is the theme for this programme of transcriptions of melodies and Lieder for choir accompanied by piano.
A deliciously Viennese programme for Zubin Mehta, under whose baton one of Germany’s most talented ensembles shines as never before.
A performer at the Philharmonie since its opening season, young pianist Alexandre Kantorow returns with a Brahms and Rachmaninoff programme for his first soloist concert since winning the International Tchaikovsky Competition.
