This year marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Hector Berlioz, to whom the Philharmonie de Paris will pay tribute throughout the season, including with two dedicated weekends—the opportunity to hear his greatest scores as well as lesser-known works.
This season will be punctuated by performances of Berlioz’s great works: The Childhood of Christ by the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, Te Deum by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and Roméo et Juliette by the Orchestre national de Lyon, etc. The Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner will present a grand concert of his works. The Orchestre de Paris will also join in the festivities, performing the high point in the programme, Berlioz’s Requiem.
The Orchestre Les Siècles plays a special part as well, with two concerts, one dedicated to Berlioz’s trip to Italy, and another presenting Lélio or the Return to Life. The cherry on the cake is a “mega-concert” at which the orchestra will be joined by student choirs and the Hector Berlioz European Youth Orchestra, performing some of the composer’s lesser-known works under the direction of François-Xavier Roth.
