1839: Mendelssohn directs Schubert’s Ninth in Leipzig, eleven years after the composer's death. 1919: Carl Nielsen composes incidental music for a dramatic fantasy called Aladdin at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. 1947: under Zhdanov's censorship, Shostakovich writes his Violin Concerto No. 1, dedicated to David Oistrakh.
