Each movement of Dutilleux’s cello concerto Tout un monde lointain… (A Whole Distant World…) bears a verse of Baudelaire as its epigraph. The fourth movement, Miroirs (Mirrors), is a compositional tour de force with its motives all symmetrical around horizontal or vertical axes; even the rhymes of Baudelaire’s La Mort des amants (The Death of Lovers) seem to be folded into the score’s structure.
