It was an editor named Diabelli who provided the rather uninspired waltz that serves as the theme for the Diabelli Variations and Beethoven’s resulting work is a masterful exercise in transformation.  Composed in 2011, Hans Zender’s virtuosic and unpredictable 33 Variations on 33 Variations are more of an exercise in zooming, of approaching and distancing themselves from the original.
