In 1942, Léonide Massine commissioned Chagall to create the scenery and costumes for Aleko, a ballet based on a work by Pushkin and set to the music of Tchaikovsky. Born in Vitebsk in 1887, Chagall designed sets and costumes for a number of stage productions – a facet of his work showcased in this dance-oriented project.
