Deuxième Partie
Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto
A remarkable event with this appearance by Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto—two key figures in adventurous music-making and collaborators for nearly a decade, together mapping out new landscapes between piano, percussions and sound processing.

Nine years after his first visit to the Cité de la musique, Japanese master Ryuichi Sakamoto returns with German electronic musician Alva Noto to perform from the repertoire the duo has refined over a series of six albums. Delicate experimentations, in which the mix of piano and processed sounds create surprising forms. An invitation to full immersion in music that is gentle yet sharp, exacting yet welcoming; in other words, music as uncommon as these two artists and their evolution. From the Yellow Magic Orchestra to his electroacoustic work and an impressive number of film scores, Sakamoto’s oeuvre over the past forty years is distinguished by its elegance and his constant quest for new sounds. Over the past twenty years, Alva Noto, the stage name of Carsten Nicolai, has been turning out electronica albums teeming with inventions, along with multiple collaborations and remixes, e.g. for Ludovico Einaudi and Björk.

Opening act: Echo Collective plays Jóhann Jóhannsson’s ‘12 Conversations with Thilo Heinzmann’

Belgian ensemble Echo Collective will perform Jóhann Jóhannsson’s suite for string quartet, a work that holds a special place in the oeuvre of the late Icelandic composer.

Two years after the passing of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, his extraordinary body of work continues to reveal its riches through not only extensive recordings (rare versions, re-releases, box sets) but also concerts. 12 Conversations with Thilo Heinzmann is a suite of movements for string quartet, performed for the first time in London in 2016, before being reworked for Echo Collective with Jóhannsson’s approval. It shows another side of his talent, closer to baroque music than his work for film and his albums, on which there were often electronic arrangements in places, which is not the case here. This performance of the score by Echo Collective, a regular at Days Off, follows the ensemble’s superb orchestral rendition of Radiohead’s Amnesiac in 2018.
