Released between 1979 and 1986, Nan Goldin’s The Ballad of Sexual Dependency was one of the photographer’s earliest series, yet it rightfully remains one of her best-known works today. The slideshow projected on a large screen is accompanied by the music of the Tiger Lillies. This dark and provocative London-based trio have a Brechtian-inspired style and the contorted faces they pull through their make-up match the images perfectly. The Ballad of Sexual Dependency is a masterpiece, an authentic rendering of modern times.
