Fantasia is as-ever a marvellous visual and auditory experience. Indeed, this beloved narrative suite was created around music, originally starring the Philadelphia Orchestra and its conductor Leopold Stokowski.

The seven segments of Fantasia, including several that have become legendary, compose a giant storybook of illustrated musical scores, some more ‘narrative’ than others. There is of course the powerful transcription of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for organ, associated by Hollywood with scenes of suspense and ‘Gothic’ ambiances; but who could forget Mickey’s battle against an army of brooms set to Paul Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, or the telluric and primitivist scenes set to the fierceness of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, the depiction of the gods and creatures of Antiquity, a theme dear to Beethoven, set to his Pastoral Symphony, or the mountain that turns into a demon set to Mussorgsky’s frenetic Night on Bald Mountain, until Schubert's Ave Maria, like the lustral dawn, dispels the Sabbath night? Unique among Disney productions, this gem remains the studios’ greatest work of ‘fantasy’ and an unrivalled ode to the art of orchestra.
