In his Memoirs, the writer Saint-Simon painted a number of portraits which have a particular affinity with portraits found in the music of the ‘Grand Siècle’ (seventeenth century France), especially François Couperin’s Harpsichord Pieces. In their own way, both evoke life in the Court of Louis XIV.
