Orchestre de Paris / Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Alexandre Kantorow - Tchaïkovski, Chostakovitch
Symphonic Concert
Grande salle Pierre Boulez - Philharmonie
Duration: about 1h57 with 1 intermission

Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski
Concerto pour piano n° 2
Dimitri Chostakovitch
Symphonie n° 4
Orchestre de Paris
Jukka-Pekka Saraste , conducting
Alexandre Kantorow , piano

Two masterpieces of the Russian school are paired in this Philharmonie de Paris concert—for an evening of galvanizing pianistic virtuosity and orchestral immensity, plus hedonistic charm and dramatic intensity.

Though not as famous as his first, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.2 is equally rich in wonders: a brilliant and dizzyingly-paced Allegro, an Andante in the spirit of a chamber intermezzo, and a lively and elegant Finale imbued with folk inspirations.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No.4, which was not premiered until long after its composition, is one of the most colossal and emotionally powerful pieces in the repertoire, featuring a mix of experimental forms. It stunningly demonstrates the composer’s distinctive techniques: contrasting blocks, sharp harmonies, heart-rending melodic expressiveness, a taste for sarcasm… The Finale, a grand lamento that becomes a Scherzo and then a triumphant chorus, could be a symphony of its own.
