1/ Kevin Morby solo
Kevin Morby was 25 years old when his debut solo album came out in 2013. When was the last time a songwriter with such mature and solid talent had emerged? He had made previous records with the groups Woods and The Babies, but still… There was an air of Bob Dylan in his confidence, the ease in the all-his-own way he plays folk music and delivers his lyrics. Almost nine minutes long, Harlem River—the album’s title track—hypnotises with its percussion, guitar, organ and voice. With an unrelenting series of tours and new albums, he has since gone on to confirm the strength and stamina of an artist who finds fulfilment in his work. Performing here alone with his guitar, Kevin Morby will offer a stripped-down rendition of his fifth album, the superb Oh My God released in 2019—the perfect way to (re)discover songs whose studio versions tend to be highly arranged, with keyboards, choir, harp and saxophone, etc.
2/ Symphonic Andrew Bird
After drawing notice in 2003 with Weather Systems—though he already had some musician flight hours and four records to his name—Andrew Bird quickly established himself as one of the most brilliant American singer-songwriters of the new century. A classically trained violinist, exceptional singer and lyricist and impressive whistler on the side, he is one of the key forces in a new chapter in folk. His albums, musical friendships (from electro musician Dosh to country band The Handsome Family), and many collaborations and alternative projects paint a picture of a curious, bold and exacting artist—comfortable on his own or in a group. A previous guest at Days Off, with a truly memorable concert in 2015, Andrew Bird returns this time without his musicians, yet far from alone: the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France—conducted by Jonas Ehrler—will accompany him on reworked versions of his songs and the French premiere of a 40-minute instrumental piece. With arrangements by the excellent composer Gabriel Kahane, we can expect nothing short of a soaring musical experience.
