Excerpt
“Breath is the foundation, even of music,” declared Toshio Hosokawa about Atem-Lied (“Song of breath”) for solo bass flute (1997). His new work is inspired by a famous piece of Nô theatre by Zeami, Futari Shizuoka (“The Two Shizukas”), from which Oriza Hirata has made a scenario that embodies the spirit of Shizuka, a legendary dancer whose name means both “silence” and “serenity” at once.
