The fascination with this theme in the first half the 20th century is admirably expressed in the art of Ravel and Debussy. Ravel’s ballet Daphnis and Chloé evokes the young girl’s abduction by cruel pirates, and Debussy’s La Mer (The Sea) turns the orchestra into the shimmering of the sun on the crest of the waves.
