Written in 1948 for a group comprised primarily of amateur musicians, Britten’s Saint Nicolas cantata recounts the saint’s life from birth to death, including notably his trip to Palestine and the memorable storm he encountered during the journey, as well as his resurrection of three children who had been killed and chopped by a butcher.
