When Beethoven was commissioned to compose incidental music for a play by Goethe in 1810, he was filled with excitement for its subject: Count Egmont’s heroism during the Dutch liberation. The composition of his last piano concerto during the same period was interrupted first by the bombing of Vienna, then by the city’s occupation in 1808.
