Romantic audacity and virtuosity… Since 1830, Berlioz has shocked Paris with the instrumental drama of his Symphonie fantastique. The enthusiastic public called for an encore of certain passages. A quarter of a century later, Franz Liszt had a surprise of his own: his Concerto No. 1 (conducted by Berlioz) resembled a vast rhapsody in a free and poetic form.
