Part of Nils Frahm’s carte blanche
Moses Sumney
Moses Sumney’s singular voice—high-pitched, with an uncommon litheness and delicacy—is what sets him apart in American R&B. It is an incomparable asset, uncannily drawing the listener into the California-based singer-songwriter’s intimate, melancholy universe. With his thrilling debut album Aromanticism also musically transcendent, notably with its strong piano, acoustic guitar, and orchestral pop, it is no wonder that David Byrne, Solange, James Blake, St Vincent, and Sufjan Stevens have sought out the 28-year-old prodigy to open for them. In choir as a boy, Sumney took the habit of singing a cappella. He recorded his first tracks quite late, using a home studio given to him by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, a hybrid band with which he shares an affinity for floating melodies that venture freely into open spaces. If cosmic soul were a competitive sport, Moses Sumney would surely take the gold.
