Salle des concerts - Cité de la musique

  • Meryem Aboulouafa
  • Nicolas Godin
A previous guest at the Philharmonie de Paris with his group Air, Nicolas Godin now presents Concrete and Glass, his second solo album inspired by modern architecture. A concert of pure lines and large volumes, fittingly set within the Cité de la musique.

Five years after Contrepoint—his stunning debut solo album inspired by the work of Jean-Sébastien Bach—Nicolas Godin returns with an aesthetic closer to the classics he created with Air, reminiscent in the elegance of the melodies and the opulence of the arrangements, shared between synthesisers and organic instruments, and with the vocoder as a sort of vocal signature. Modern and welcoming, Concrete and Glass also features voices from around the world—those of Californians Cola Boyy (who performed at Days Off in 2018) and Kadhja Bonet, British musician Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) and Russian artist Kate NV. This international pop echoes Nicolas Godin’s inspiration, the Architectones project by visual artist Xavier Veilhan, made up of site-specific installations at places of architectural importance in Los Angeles, Marseilles, Barcelona and Moscow. For Nicolas Godin, who studied architecture, each building was the inspiration for one of his pieces—conveying a vision of music as utopia at its closest to people, and songs like bright little cities in which to live the future now.

Opening act: Meryem Aboulouafa

With her clear voice and discretely modern lyrics and compositions, Moroccan singer-songwriter Meryem Aboulouafa’s presents the songs from her debut album, coming out this spring.
In Casablanca, where she lives, Meryem Aboulouafa honed the musical style the world is now discovering over several years—from hearing rock and chanson classics at the family music library to her music theory classes at the Conservatory, to the poems she wrote in French and Arabic in the privacy of her bedroom, and her first songs performed solo on guitar before ever embarking on the adventure of studio recording. But it was in Paris that she perfected the pop element of her songs, in collaboration with a top-notch duo: DJ and electronic producer Para One, known in particular for his scores to Céline Sciamma’s films, and musician Maxime Daoud, aka Ojard, who creates gentle, opulent instrumental pieces. After nine months in the studio, the result is Meryem—a debut album that is a modern pop melting pot of cultures, sounds and languages.
