Twenty years after its triumphant release, Radiohead’s masterpiece in an acoustic arrangement by string quintet Wooden Elephant, who has made playing pop albums its trademark.

With the colossal success and sonic audacity of OK Computer, Radiohead claimed its place as one of the defining rock groups of the 1990s. Exposing the songs of Kid A to radical experimentation and the vicissitudes of electronic music and jazz, Radiohead thrust pop into the new millennium. Released in October 2000, the album marked a resounding liberation and a ground zero: the following decade would be an exhilarating age of possibilities for the band. It is this freedom that British quintet Wooden Elephant salutes with its daring rereading of Kid A. Led by violist Ian Anderson (who with the London Contemporary Orchestra has collaborated with Radiohead and its guitarist Johnny Greenwood), the ensemble unleashes the imagination to recreate these complex songs with double bass, cello, viola and violins, along with a few home-made inventions. It is a project worth seeing live before the record version comes out in the autumn, for the 20th anniversary of Kid A.
