It was while listening to Beethoven on the gramophone that Virginia Woolf had the idea for her novel The Waves, and the composer’s String Quartet No. 14, Op. 131 seems to have played an influential role in the development of free indirect discourse.  This concert intertwines text and music, from a string quartet by Woolf’s friend Ethel Smyth, to The Art of Fugue.
