First in the series of “Prussian” quartets, Mozart’s String Quartet No. 21 was composed during the same period as Così fan tutte (1790) and is characterized by the major role accorded to the cello in the polyphony. When it comes to Brahms’ Quintet op. 34, it carries a symphonic profile that would later earn the admiration of Arnold Schönberg.
