While Christoph Willibald Gluck's Armide was created for the Paris Opera in 1777, its libretto was originally written by Quinault for Lully a century earlier. The music, however, is of an incomparable sensuality, particularly when depicting the knight Renaud's enchanted sleep or the evil supernatural forces.
