The first version of this opera was created 20 November 1805 in Vienna. With the city occupied by Napoleon’s troops, only three performances were given. It was reworked several times before finally taking form as Fidelio in 1814. Returning to the initial version, René Jacobs presents an unveiling that gives new access to this masterpiece of music and political engagement.
