Benjamin Berlioz

DOUBLE BASS

After studying at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris in Jean Marc Rollez’s class, where he was awarded first prize for double bass in 1993, Benjamin Berlioz joined the Orchestre de Paris whilst also pursuing a career in chamber music alongside today’s leading performers.

He began his career as a chamber musician in 1997 as a founding member of the Deauville Easter Festival alongside Renaud Capuçon, Jérôme Pernoo and Jérôme Ducros. Since then, he has been sought after by renowned ensembles to perform on the world’s greatest stages: the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Salle Pleyel, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, Osaka Festival Hall, Kioi Hall in Tokyo, Teatro Amazonas in Manaus (Brazil), the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow, and the Geneva Conservatoire Hall…

He performs regularly with the Talich, Ysaÿe, Manfred, Sine Nomine and Élysées Quartets, the Fine Arts Quartet, the Moragues Quintet and the Wanderer Trio, as well as with ensembles of the younger generation such as the Ébène, Ardeo, Psophos, Modigliani and Zaïde Quartets. He also performs alongside soloists such as Menahem Pressler, Natalia Gutman, Gordan Nikolitch, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Raphaël Oleg, Valery Afanassiev, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Jean-Marc Luisada, Franck Braley and Paul Meyer…

Benjamin Berlioz has recorded the complete chamber music of Michael Glinka with Alexandre Brussilovsky and Kun-Woo Paik (Suoni & Colori), Schubert’s The Trout Quintet with Renaud Capuçon, Laurent Verney, Jérôme Pernoo and Jérôme Ducros (Erato), as well as with Menahem Pressler and the Ebène Quartet for the same label, Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals with Pierre Arditi and the Ensemble Contrastes (Lorcom), and Chopin’s Concerto in E minor in a version for piano and string quintet with Jean-Marc Luisada and the Talich Quartet (RCA).

Benjamin Berlioz is a double bass teacher at the Bordeaux Centre for Higher Music Education.
