Stanislas Kuchinski
DOUBLE BASS
Stanislas Kuchinski began his musical studies in Douai, where he was awarded prizes in piano, harmony, counterpoint and piano accompaniment. At the age of 16, he enrolled at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP), where he studied double bass in Jean-Marc Rollez’s class, as well as chamber music, musical analysis and pedagogy. He was unanimously awarded first prize in double bass, as well as a certificate of aptitude to teach double bass. He then divided his time between his work as a performing musician, teacher and arranger, whilst continuing his training in orchestration and conducting at the École normale de musique de Paris.
A permanent member of the Orchestre de Paris since 2002, Stanislas Kuchinski has collaborated with great maestros such as Lorin Maazel, Mstislav Rostropovich, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Paavo Järvi, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Harding… and currently performs under the baton of the young prodigy Klaus Mäkelä. He plays an active role in the orchestra’s cultural outreach, supporting children and adults in hospital and helping groups of teenagers with disabilities to carry out musical projects. He also visits reception centres for refugees and marginalised people, as well as schools in disadvantaged areas, to share musical experiences. As part of the partnership between Démos and the Orchestre de Paris, he has been deeply involved from the very beginning in mentoring the double bass section and creating arrangements for the project.
Stanislas Kuchinski, who is also passionate about traditional music, is the double bassist with the Sirba Octet and founded the Bubamara Quintet. Furthermore, since 2008 he has been conducting the Châtillon Conservatoire (92) Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble comprising the conservatoire’s most talented students (where he has also been teaching double bass since 1996) and amateur musicians. With this orchestra, he devises and experiments with ambitious programmes and performances, blending classical music, jazz, hip-hop, singing, dance and musical theatre. He conducted Les Parapluies de Cherbourg in 2024.
Stanislas Kuchinski devises, adapts and produces original concert and performance concepts for small ensembles. Some of these productions are performed exclusively by musicians from the Orchestre de Paris for audiences of all ages: Disco-classique, Napoleon and Music, Balkan Festival, Vaska, Hip-Hop Mozart… or for children, with musical tales such as The Story of the Baby Elephant, The Story of the Crab Who Played with the Sea and The Story of the Cat Who Went Off on His Own. Other productions and arrangements are commissioned and performed by other musicians: Cinderella, That Funny Bird, A Life of Verdi, Carmen in a gypsy jazz version, Peer Gynt, Mother Goose, La Belle Hélène, Butterfly: The Flight, Portrait of Camille Claudel, and Michel Legrand in Montcabrier. He collaborates with ensembles such as the Quatuor Page Blanche and the Trio ABC. In 2019, he founded the publishing and production company Kuchmaster Publishing.
