Philippe Berrod

PRINCIPAL CLARINET

Principal clarinettist with the Orchestre de Paris since 1995, Philippe Berrod has performed as a soloist with, amongst others, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra in Munich and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.

Having been unanimously awarded first prize at the Paris Conservatoire in the class of Guy Deplus and Guy Dangain, he has won numerous international competitions (Paris, Vierzon, Reims, Trapani, the Menuhin Foundation Prize, the Ministry of Culture Prize and the Sacem Prize).

He performs as a soloist worldwide, with a repertoire ranging from Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra to Pierre Boulez’s Dialogue de l’ombre double for clarinet and electronics, which he performed notably at the Konzerthaus in Berlin to mark the composer’s 80th birthday, in collaboration with IRCAM.

Philippe Berrod has also had the privilege of working with composers such as Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, Krystof Penderecki, Edisson Denisow, Pascal Dusapin, Marc-André Dalbavie, Philippe Hersant, Bruno Mantovani, Olivier Greif, Luis Naon, Nicolas Bacri and Michel Petrossian... and to have been instrumental in the creation of new works for solo clarinet.

Philippe Berrod has made numerous recordings, including the box set *Les Vents Français*, released by Sony Classical – Indésens in 2009, the album *Art of Clarinet*, and the complete chamber music works for wind instruments by Saint-Säens, Schumann and Poulenc, all of which have been unanimously praised by the press: 4 Télérama keys, Choc Classica, Diapason d’Or, resmusica’s ‘Key of the Year’… He was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique and was the guest of honour in 2011.

His penchant for exploring uncharted musical territory has led him to take part in original projects with fellow musicians, such as the albums “Clarinet Latino” (Cristal Records) and “Clarinet Classica” (Sony Music), two educational DVDs for Cristal Records / Selmer, improvisation sessions for Radio France with Jean-François Zygel, and, above all, with the Sirba Octet, a Yiddish and Gypsy music ensemble, with whom he has recorded CDs for Naïve and La Dolce Volta / Harmonia Mundi, which have already sold over 40,000 copies.

Philippe Berrod is artistic advisor to the French instrument maker Selmer-Paris, and leads clarinet masterclasses in China, the USA, Latin America and Europe.
