Stéphane Labeyrie

PRINCIPAL TUBA

Stéphane Labeyrie studied the tuba with Marc Ursule at the Toulouse Regional National Conservatoire, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1991. That same year, he enrolled at the Lyon Conservatoire (CNSMD) in Mel Culbertson’s class. In 1992, he was awarded the Special Prize for Musicality at the Markneukirchen International Competition (Germany).

In 1995, he obtained his postgraduate diploma from the CNSMD in Lyon, and was subsequently invited to perform at the closing concert of the International Tuba Congress in Chicago. He won first prize at the Sydney International Competition and first prize at the Markneukirchen International Competition in 1996. A year later, he won first prize at the Riva Del Garda International Competition (Italy).

After performing at the Opéra de Lyon with Kent Nagano, and spending two years with the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, he has held the post of principal tuba with the Orchestre de Paris since October 1999. He has recorded several albums, both as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles.

He currently plays Yamaha instruments and is involved in their development.
