Florian Wallez

Viola

Florian Wallez began his musical studies at the Douai Regional Conservatoire, where he was awarded a Gold Medal for viola in 1980. He studied with Bruno Pasquier from 1978 to 1983, and attended masterclasses given by Pierre-Henri Xuereb, Tasso Adamopoulos, Fiodor Droujinine and Yuri Bashmet. Admitted to the Paris National Conservatoire of Music in 1983 at the age of 17 to study under Serge Collot, he was awarded a First Prize for viola there in 1985.

After collaborating with the Ensemble intercontemporain and performing with the newly formed Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, he joined the Orchestre de Paris in 1987.

As the violist of the Denis Clavier Quartet from 1993 to 1999, he recorded four critically acclaimed CDs devoted to French music (works by Théodore Gouvy and Reynaldo Hahn). As part of the European Viola Association, Florian Wallez made the world premiere recording of Reynaldo Hahn’s *Soliloque* and *Forlane* for viola and piano.

Florian Wallez holds the Certificate of Competence in Viola Teaching and teaches at the Maurice Ravel Conservatoire in Levallois and the Conservatoire of the 13th arrondissement.

Florian Wallez performs in numerous chamber music concerts and, notably, toured Japan in 2013 with a string quartet comprising his colleagues from the Orchestre de Paris: Christophe Mourguiart, Saori Izumi and Emmanuel Gaugué.

Convinced of the importance of training in musical listening, he wrote and recorded accompaniments for Charles Dancla’s *Études Mélodiques* for violin (or viola) to provide pupils with harmonic and stylistic support for their independent practice.
