Viola

Clément Batrel-Genin is a violist and has been a member of the Orchestre de Paris since 2017. He also performs with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, the Solistes Européens Luxembourg and Les Dissonances. A passionate chamber musician, he is a founding member of the Onslow Quartet and the Fougères Trio, and in 2022 he joined the Jazzimut Quartet. He is also a regular guest with the Sirba Octet. He performs as a chamber musician at the Philharmonie de Paris, the Cité de la Musique and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and is a guest at numerous festivals in France and abroad. In 2021, he premiered and recorded Olivier Kaspar’s Viola Concerto ‘Ganymède’ for the Europa Lyrica label. Furthermore, his interest in early music has led him to collaborate regularly with ensembles playing period instruments, such as Les Arts Florissants, Le Consort and Les Ombres…

After beginning his training in Montreuil and then in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, he joined the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP) in 2013, studying under Jean Sulem, and undertook a study visit to the Cleveland Institute of Music in the United States. He took part in the Seiji Ozawa International Academy Switzerland and was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.

He also has an interest in academic disciplines and has been awarded prizes for composition and orchestration at Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, as well as the prize for 15th–17th-century polyphony from the Paris Conservatoire. He has written numerous arrangements and transcriptions for various ensembles.

With a keen interest in teaching and the challenges of passing on musical knowledge, he taught the violin, viola and chamber music for many years. He was also involved in the Démos programme, run by the Philharmonie de Paris.
