Julien Desgranges
PRINCIPAL BASS CLARINET
Julien Desgranges began playing the clarinet at the age of 8 at the Caen Conservatoire, whilst also taking up singing, joining the Caen choir under the direction of Robert Weddle. Having been awarded a gold medal in clarinet and chamber music, he continued his studies at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (CNSMDL) in Jacques Di Donato’s class, where in 2005 he was awarded a first prize in clarinet with the distinction ‘Très bien’, along with a special mention from the jury for the originality of his musical composition Clarinage, performed as a duet with Philippe Bord, a horn player and juggler.
Passionate about teaching, he then enrolled on the diploma course leading to the Certificate of Aptitude for Clarinet Teachers and, at the same time, pursued a dual programme: an advanced clarinet course at the CNSM in Lyon and the bass clarinet course at the CNSM in Paris in Jean-Noël Crocq’s class, where he was awarded the DFS with the distinction ‘Très bien’ in 2008.
Having obtained his CA in clarinet at the age of 23, he was immediately appointed to the dual role of clarinet teacher at the Caen Regional Conservatoire (CRR) and principal clarinettist with the Caen Orchestra in 2007, where he combines his two complementary roles as a performer and a teacher.
Building on his experience and his meeting in 2008 with the pianist Andrea Turra, they formed a duo which led them to compete in international competitions.
Julien Desgranges won, notably, 2nd prize at the International Crusell Clarinet Competition in Finland in 2009 (Uusikaupunki), a first prize for chamber music (sonata) with Andrea Turra at the Saverio Mercadante Competition in Bari, Italy; a third prize for chamber music and clarinet at the “Concorso Internazionale di Musica di Marco Fiorindo” in Nichelino, Italy; and a third prize for clarinet and the special prize for the best performance of a new work at the "Claude Debussy" International Clarinet Competition in Paris in 2010.
In 2007, Julien Desgranges co-founded the basset horn trio “Les Flamants Noirs” with Olivier Derbesse and Rémi Delangle. They have recorded two albums and enjoy “dusting off” and developing the repertoire for this ensemble. He is also a member of the Wind Art Orchestra (WAO). Julien Desgranges is regularly invited to perform with numerous orchestras in France and abroad (the Rouen Opera Orchestra, the Normandy Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Brittany, the National Orchestra of the Capitole de Toulouse, the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra, the ‘Going Home Orchestra’ festival in South Korea, etc.)
Between 2012 and 2017, he was also invited to share his experience and teach at the Pont Supérieur in Rennes-Pays de la Loire as a lecturer in chamber music and clarinet. Whilst continuing to hold his post as a tenured clarinet lecturer at the CRR in Caen, he was appointed principal bass clarinetist with the Orchestre de Paris in October 2021.
